Nepal Emergency Assistance
A huge 7.8 magnitude earthquake has hit Nepal, toppling buildings and destroying roads and infrastructure. Over 5,000 deaths have already been reported and over 10,000 people have been injured. As we get more information through, we fear these numbers will rise.
As children and their families come to terms with the aftermath of the quake, water supplies are running low and the risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera is growing rapidly. Unicef has over 200 staff working in Kathmandu and the surrounding area, delivering clean water and other life-saving supplies to children and families in danger.
The first supplies of food aid began reaching remote, earthquake-shattered mountain villages in Nepal, as the official death toll of the quake topped 6,200.

Royal Group Charity on Ebola
More than 12 months after the largest ever Ebola outbreak began, the situation is finally improving. Transmission is reduced from its peak in Guinea and Sierra Leone. Liberia’s chains of transmission seem contained, though investigations into one recent case continue.
There is no vaccine to prevent Ebola, although research is underway.
The current outbreak is spreading person to person, via bodily fluids. The virus is present in fluids like blood, vomit, semen, sweat, etc. The top way to protect yourself is to avoid direct unprotected contact with sick people and their body fluids.

Relief and Aid contributions
As we respond to the needs of people affected by Ebola in West Africa, Royal Group Charity Foundation wishes to note its policy regarding donor-designated contributions as it has done in previous high-profile emergencies (such as Typhoon Haiyan last year, Superstorm Sandy the year before, the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami, and the 2010 Haiti earthquake).
Royal Group Charity Foundation’s policy regarding designated contributions for Ebola response activities is simple: Royal Group Charity Foundation will use all contributions designated for “Ebola Relief” directly for relief and recovery efforts related to the Ebola Crisis.
Royal Group Charity Foundation recognizes the importance of enabling donors to communicate their intentions regarding donations and explaining how the organization carefully accounts for and uses designated contributions to honor the donors’ intentions. Royal group Charity takes several steps to ensure that both donors’ intentions and the organization’s use of contributions are clear.
Ebola relief contributions will be used only for Ebola-related programmatic costs and administrative expenses directly related to the Ebola relief activity.
General, unrestricted financial support is essential for Royal Group Charity to fulfill any of its deeply compelling humanitarian activities, including being able to respond rapidly to any emergency as the organization has done in the ongoing Ebola outbreak. Indeed, much of Royal Group Charity Foundation’s current Ebola-response activities have been guided by and in support of key partners that Royal Group Charity already was supporting in the affected countries — with such general funds – and are now playing central, critical roles in response to the crisis. That is why such unrestricted contributions always are needed, deeply appreciated, and enable Royal Group Charity to assist people in many places and situations that do not make the news.
However, Royal Group Charity Foundation is obligated to – and will always – honor the intent of a donor-designated financial contribution, including, obviously, in this instance with regard to Ebola-designated contributions. If a donor were to make a clearly restricted gift for a purpose or with a restriction that Royal Group Charity is not able to fulfill or comply with, Royal Group Charity Foundation will advise the donor of this situation and inquire if other uses may be permitted. If a donor’s intent cannot be met, Royal Group Charity will offer to direct the gift to another nonprofit able to fulfill the donor’s intent or return the gift.
Africa’s children need an education if Africa is to prosper. These children yearn to learn. We can help fulfil that yearning – lifting them & their communities out of poverty.
The problems can be awful. The solutions are not rocket science. With your help and the children’s courage, education, opportunities and hope for the future can be achieved.
SIGNS OF HOPE
One month after launching the Ebola Crisis Appeal, Royal Group Charity has now raised $2 million and says there are at last some signs of hope that the outbreak is beginning to be brought under control.
Royal Group Charity Foundation warned against complacency, saying there was still a huge amount of work to be done to contain the spread of the disease and to support those affected, and that further funding was still urgently needed to continue this work. Royal Group Charity Ebola Crisis Appeal was launched on 11th November with broadcast appeals presented by H.H Prince Khalid Al-Sabah.
Although the rate of infection in two of the worst affected countries Liberia and Guinea is no longer increasing nationally, there are still hotspots within those countries where Ebola transmission remains intense. In Sierra Leone, the rate of new infections remains worryingly high nationally. The majority of new cases are in the West and North of the country, including the capital Freetown.
Both the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) public and Government have been very generous in their support of the response to the crisis but Global funding is still well short of what is required. The UN has identified work by all agencies costing $1.5bn that is required but to date only $816m has been given.
H.H Prince Khalid Al-Sabah, Founder of Royal Group Charity Foundation, made the following statement….
The main credit for bringing this terrible disease under control belongs to the communities in West Africa for the incredible courage and care they have shown. They have changed the way they bury their dead and how they care for their sick, and have also changed hygiene practices that help prevent the spread. These communities have been supported by Royal Group Charity and our partners as part of a wider international effort.
It is incredibly important that we do not relent until Ebola is under control in all areas still affected. This will mean taking a flexible approach to ensure our response focuses on areas currently experiencing high rates of transmission but also areas where transmission may yet flair up.
Over 5,000 people have been killed by the virus and more than 13,000 have been infected. However, experts say the real figures could be far higher due to under-reporting.
Since the beginning of the outbreak, Royal Group Charity Foundation and its partners have helped over 2 thousand people across the region, the majority of whom have received information to help them to stay safe and stop the spread of the disease. This work has in part been funded by Royal Group and its royal members.
ERADICATING EXTREME POVERTY
Eradicating extreme poverty and substantially reducing moderate poverty by 2030 requires major shifts in policy priorities. To ensure that no one is denied universal human rights and basic economic opportunities, any new development agenda should focus on ensuring inclusive economic growth and reducing inequalities.
Employment opportunities need to be generated, consistent with the decent work agenda. As the vast majority of poor people live in impoverished rural areas, the main focus must be on building more productive, diversified and resilient local rural economies with stronger rural-urban economic linkages, and through the accelerated adoption of climate-smart and sustainable production methods. The will require a transformative agenda:
The majority of the rural poor are smallholder farmers, who are responsible for most global food production. Helping them to improve farm productivity through better access to resources, technologies, markets and organizations will be critical for both poverty eradication and food security. Compared to general growth in low-income developing countries, agricultural growth’s impact on poverty reduction could be as much as five times greater;
Reducing poverty requires ecological and resource sustainability. Increased food production will exacerbate land degradation, greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss unless production methods and consumption patterns become more sustainable. Smallholder farmers will need affordable access to technologies and infrastructure to sustainably transform food systems;
Diversification of employment into non-agricultural activities will be essential to accelerate both rural and urban poverty reduction. Growth of non-farm activities is often driven by agricultural growth and can stimulate local employment creation;
Closing the gender gaps in education and access to productive resources can substantially boost women’s empowerment and incomes, particularly in agriculture and rural areas;
Roads and electricity improve connectivity to markets, strengthen rural-urban linkages, increase agricultural and non-agricultural productivity and create employment;
Better social protection can help the poor better manage risks, improve their livelihoods, and enhance the health and education of their children. It will thus not only help accelerate the eradication of poverty and hunger, but also reduce disparities in life chances;
Early investments in education, health and nutrition in rural areas are essential. Many youth face bleak economic prospects whether they stay in the countryside or migrate to cities. Increasing gainful opportunities by enhancing the skills of rural youth, and upgrading and diversifying local economic activities is therefore essential for improving youth prospects;
Addressing undernutrition will also contribute to poverty reduction by enhancing economic capacity, human capability and earnings potential, through better physical and cognitive development and sufficient dietary energy to be productive.

REACHING OUT
A BIG THANK YOU
to everyone that supports us.
We try to meet individuals, families and groups struggling with poverty, wherever they live or work. We take the time and make the effort to discover what life is really like for them. Without giving money or material things, we make contact with them and gain enough of their confidence to be able to work together on projects that are important to them. Also, we make contact with people or groups who are already involved in the fight against poverty.
Royal Group Charity Foundation plans to host the Annual Convention on Africa against poverty and social exclusion which would be a valuable opportunity for dialogue between policy makers, key shareholders and people who have experienced poverty.

Everyone deserves an education regardless of age or gender, religion or physical capacity, ethnic group or displacement through conflict. Education is essential if people are to participate in the life of their own communities.

On behalf of Royal Group Charity Foundation, we begin by expressing our deepest condolences to all those affected by the earthquake in Nepal, including the families of those who died in Nepal, India, Bangladesh, and China. Royal Group Charity Foundation is providing protective clothing and other supplies to hospitals fighting Ebola in Sierra Leone and is using its networks throughout the country to educate about Ebola.
Crises like the Ebola outbreak in West Africa highlight the problem of foreign aid workers who are too integrated into the system. When catastrophe strikes, they are the first to leave. Development that is driven by nationals makes all the difference. In Sierra Leone Royal Group Charity an Aid for Africa member organization, is helping to contain the Ebola crisis through well established networks. Almost all of its 70 staff members are Sierra Leoneans, who are training medical workers and educating the public about Ebola care and safety
